The Highlands and Islands Enterprise network is responsible to the Scottish Executive for the economic and social development of half of Scotland, from the Mull of Kintyre to Shetland, the Western Isles to Moray. HIE's main sectors of business activity are in: food and drink; manufacturing and production; tourism; knowledge, information and telecommunications. It exercises powers of economic development, community development, training and career development.
HIE comprises a central, strategic body in Inverness at the core of a wider network of 10 Local Enterprise Companies and 16 Careers Scotland centres which deliver a range of development and training functions in their own areas.
The Network provides financial assistance to business by way of grant, loan or equity and can build factories, workshops and offices for companies and organisations. It also develops the area's facilities and attractions, both as a location for inward investment and a tourism destination. A wide range of business advisory services is also available. It delivers and develops a wide range of training schemes at all levels and provides learning and training programme support for businesses.
