The Alliance Trust PLC is the third-largest UK investment trust company by assets* and a FTSE-250 company. Founded in 1888, the Alliance Trust aims to provide its investors with access to a fully diversified portfolio of assets that grow and give them income. With assets of more than £1.6bn**, the Alliance Trust seeks to achieve its goal through expert investment around the world in a range of assets.

The Alliance Trust invests in equities, bonds, property and other assets and also runs businesses in its own right. It currently owns 75% of UK financial services company, Alliance Trust Savings (ATS), which has more than 36,000 clients and administers more than £1.4bn on their behalf. ATS offers self-select Investment Plans, PEPs, ISAs and SIPPs.

The Alliance Trust began investing in the 19th century when wealthy Scottish investors with vision saw the promise of the emerging United States. The company started as a mortgage lender to homesteaders in the American West. Over the decades, Alliance Trust has grown through a versatile approach to a changing world. It progressed from mortgages into property and bonds and finally to specialising in equity investment in the mid-20th century. Equities still make up the bulk of its portfolio but it allocates company assets across a broad range of investments.

The trust has been investing globally for generations from its headquarters in Dundee where it has a staff of more than 90 people. It currently has around 15% of its investments in Asia-Pacific*** and in April 2005 opened an office in Hong Kong from where it manages its growing portfolio of investments in the Asia-Pacific region.
